  • Our Dog Mentors

Fairford Academy Barnehurst introduced Dog Mentors to enhance our nurturing and supportive environment.  These specially-trained dogs, alongside their handlers, help enhance the emotional well-being of children by providing companionship, reducing anxiety, and promoting a sense of calm. Interaction with Dog Mentors has been shown to improve social skills, boost confidence, and encourage positive behaviour. By integrating Dog Mentors into the school community, we are fostering an inclusive atmosphere where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The Dog Mentors at Fairford Academy Barnehurst like to join in all activities throughout the day.  Whether it’s hearing a child read in the school library, giving a tour to prospective applicants, or joining in with them at playtimes, the Dog Mentors have many different roles to play across the school.  Children throughout the school are given opportunities to play with the dogs, to take care of their daily needs and to even train them to do new tricks!

Hi, I’m Nova! I have been at Fairford since I was 10 weeks old. I love it here and think of it as my second home. I work alongside the SEND TA. I’m based in year 6 but each day, I go to year 3’s English session and then year 4’s Maths. I love wandering around the classrooms having the children tell me about their amazing work. You will find me at the door, greeting you as you come in. I love my tummy rubbed but my absolute favourite thing to do, is run around with the ‘FAB’ children

Hi! I’m Hugo and I have been working as a Dog Mentor for over 4 years.  I started as a young pup at a local school for children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs in 2019 and moved to Fairford when I was 2.  I love working with the children who have SEND and respond really well to pupils who are finding it hard to regulate their emotions.  I’m always there as a listening ear and a comforting companion because I have plenty of compassion and lots of patience.

Hi!  I’m Minty and I am always lively, happy and keen to play!  For children who need responsibility or some time out, letting off steam or just a brisk walk to put things into perspective, I’m your dog!  I will never tire of running and catching balls – in fact, I will make you laugh with my acrobatics as I fly through the air and catch a ball.  I love to visit classes and see what’s going on, but best of all I like to work with children in unstructured times.

Hi! Im Lola, I am one of Minty’s puppies, I have been in school since I was 8 weeks old.  I  love to support children into school in the mornings and  spending time in the classrooms, I enjoy having the  children walk me at lunch times and being with them 1-1 and in small groups to help build their self-esteem and confidence.  I can at times be very lively, and some may even say a little bit mischievous,  but I also have a very calm, soft, caring nature.
